Gareth Bunting

Part of the New Light Prize Exhibition 2020

Gareth Bunting graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam in 2014. He has since exhibited widely and has worked on several artist in residence projects around the world, including the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, the Pier-2 arts center in Taiwan, the Sachaqa Centro del Arte in Peru and Artcore in Derby, UK.

Broadly speaking, Gareth's practice narrates his own life experiences like a kind of visual diary. He primarily creates ink paintings which contain many reoccurring themes. There is a narrative within his works and across them over time. He challenges conceptions of space and place in the modern age of technology, social media and virtual reality. He investigates ideas surrounding wealth inequality, climate change and mental health, boldly telling his own personal story and relating it to the wider social political landscape by playfully juxtaposing symbols and iconography within dreamlike landscapes.
