This practical five-week course will guide you through the process of writing a short story: starting with how to find and develop ideas and ending with how and where to submit your finished story for publication. In doing so, you’ll discover some of the most important elements of the form and leave with everything you need to keep writing short stories in future.
You’ll learn in a small group to allow plenty of time for writing, sharing and discussion. There’ll be technical advice and tips as well as activities and exercises designed to get you thinking and writing. You’ll be encouraged and supported to share your writing in progress and give and receive constructive feedback. Detailed hand-outs will be provided to accompany each session with written instructions for all tasks and additional prompts and useful information to use afterwards. These will combine to form a short story writing handbook by the end of the course. There will also be optional homework exercises to help you develop and improve your story.
You can bring a story you’ve already started or use the prompts in the sessions to get inspired.
