Our theme for Early Summer is inspired by our headline exhibition by painter Jo Sharpe titled ‘Still/Life’ – a collection which evokes the language of folk art with its honest forms and enduring connection to place.
In the lengthening light of early summer, we turn our attention to the objects and routines that shape our daily rituals. A jug of meadow flowers gathered on a morning walk. Linen folded and refolded over time. In these simple arrangements, there is a quiet poetry.
As the memory of a cold winter fades, we’re drawn again to nature, to reconnect with the land, our neighbours and the possibilities that lie within the days stretching out ahead.
Folk traditions have long honoured the changing seasons, the domestic, the handmade and the important stories of our time.
Many of this season’s exhibitions speak to the language found within folk art. Through still lives, landscapes and portraiture, everyday objects, nature and people are thoughtfully observed, crafted by hand and offered as quiet companions for everyday life.
We invite you to pause, to look again and to spend time in the present.
