Waves Black and White Platter
By Nicholas Collins
56cm x 56cm x 8 cm deep
Wave platters are produced using cutting-edge manufacturing technology and it takes over five hours on a waterjet cutter to create the unique strands needed to create this design, which are cut from sheets of opaque white and black glass.
Each strand is distinctly individual: one strand never appears again in the design making the repeat pattern a complex selection of unique strands.
Once the strands are cut they are cleaned and laid into the design onto a kiln shelf, the lose strands then fuse together at temperatures of around 800°C, where the tile is then cut into its final shape and worked by hand to create a soft edge. The tile is then placed over a ceramic slumping mould and fired again at a lower temperature of around 650°C to form this piece. Once complete this design creates an optical wave effect with the mesmerising sensation of movement.
