Gavin Watson

Part of the New Light Prize Exhibition 2020

Born in Sunderland in 1962, Gavin Watson now lives and works in rural Northumberland. Informed by the rich visual culture of the region, his paintings explore the relationships forged between humans and animals and the internal and external worlds they share.

The narratives within Gavin’s work are multi-layered, and playfully reference a diverse range of sources from literature and art history to popular culture and contemporary is-sues. All these elements are constantly at play, resulting in mildly surreal paintings which hint at a larger narrative beyond the dreamlike scenes they represent.

Gavin has exhibited his work in New York, with Cricket Hill Associates Gallery and has regularly been selected for the BP National Portrait award. He is currently represented in London by the Jonathan Cooper, Park Walk Gallery and the Brian Sinfield gallery in Burford.
