Autumn: The Seasonal Narrative

Autumn is a season of gentle retreat and quiet reflection. This slower pace encourages us to better observe, to take time to understand process and to appreciate technique. As we welcome in our new collections, we share more about the common thread that runs through these works.

This exhibition pays particular attention to process in its many forms; in the diversity and mastery of contemporary printmaking, in the multidisciplinary approach of mixed media and in the application of paint and the moulding of clay. Here, we are drawn to work that reveals its making. Small irregularities, thoughtful details and honest materials speak of time well spent rather than time saved. They remind us that lasting things are rarely rushed.

Process asks for patience. Technique asks for attention. Pieces are shaped by hands that understand their materials, by knowledge gathered over time and by a willingness to work slowly enough for quality to emerge naturally. Technique is not about perfection. It is the quiet confidence that comes from repetition, care and experience. Every mark, line and brushstroke carries the memory of those that came before it. The process becomes part of the finished object, even if it cannot always be seen.

In a culture that can prioritise immediacy, there is something quietly radical about taking care with the process. It allows ideas to mature, materials to be understood and craftsmanship to find its natural rhythm. The result is more than an object. It is a record of attention, of skill patiently practised and of the belief that how something is made matters just as much as what it becomes.

Shirley Vauvelle: Source Material

Our Autumn headline exhibition is Source Material by Shirley Vauvelle.

Shirley is an established mixed-media artist and a selected member of the Craft Potters Association. Her exhibition brings together ceramics and paintings that share a language of process and place, a deep connection to nature and an appreciation for surface design. Incorporating botanical elements into her work Shirley uses materials found, grown and collected from her garden, creating layered, textured semi-abstract paintings and hand-built stoneware sculptural forms.

Lino North

Lino North, a new printmaking exhibition is at The Biscuit Factory this Autumm, bringing together sixteen printmakers specialising in linocut, working across the North of England, Wales and Scotland. This landmark exhibition highlights the continuing strength and diversity of contemporary printmaking, with a focus on the physical processes of carving, inking and printing.
