Rownea Beaty is a Cumbrian-based sculptor. Working mainly in limestone, and using hand tools – hammer and chisel, rasps and files – to allow for a direct and instinctive feel for the natural character of the stone. Her connection to stone began in childhood among the limestone quarries of Cumberland, where fossil hunting first revealed the ancient stories bound in rock. Recently featured in the 2024 New Light Sculpture Prize at The Biscuit Factory, Beaty has developed a distinctive practice rooted in traditional hand-carving techniques.
