Peter Flanagan was born in 1957 and spent his first eighteen years living with his family in various outposts of the retreating British Empire. He studied graphic design at Lincoln College of Art and then moved to Newcastle upon Tyne where he worked as a graphic designer for a number of years. He gradually developed more interest in fine art which led him to study for a BA (Hons) at the University of Northumbria, specialising in printmaking.
He has work in many collections in Britain and abroad, including that of the Queen Mother, Sir John Hall, Sir Ron Deering, Weatherspoons, Sericol, Northern Rock and One NorthEast.
Peter has lived for the last ten years in Allendale in the North Pennines with his wife Julie, and their five children, in a renovated seventeenth century farmhouse.
“These paintings have been painted on the streets of Newcastle over the past year. I will set up my easel on a street corner or traffic island and try to capture the light and atmosphere of that particular time, day and place in one session. Time in the studio a few days later allows my mind to focus on the essentials of the composition and pull it all together.”
“I enjoy being part of the business of a city and interesting conversations will often develop with onlookers.”
