Biography
"All of my paintings are self-portraits. And everything I paint actually happened. More or less."
Brian Pike's unique mixed-media pictures bristle with paradoxes and contradictions.
They are gently humorous, but also achingly melancholy. In graphic terms they are strikingly simple, but their subtle colours and gorgeously textured surfaces have been created by meticulously building up dozens of layers of translucent, sparkling paintwork.
The very essence of English eccentricity, these pictures are nonetheless fuelled by the artist's wilfully perverse interpretation of Japanese aesthetics. And whilst undeniably decorative, they are also deeply philosophical.
Brian lives and works in Richmond, North Yorkshire, and has been exhibiting at The Biscuit Factory since 2003.
