Jin Eui Kim is an internationally renowned ceramic artist. Originally from South Korea, he now lives and works in Cardiff, UK. Whilst at Cardiff School of Art and Design Jin Eui studied the illusory effects of the application of tonal bands to three-dimensional surfaces. He graduated with an MA and PhD in Ceramics. He was then accepted into a graduate residence at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff and remains and full time member. He is also a member of Contemporary Applied Art and the Craft Potters Association.
Kim Eui uses illusory spatial phenomena to significantly influence the actual three-dimensional forms of his work through the arrangement of bands; gradients in tone, widith and interval between bands. The duration of the viewers attention, physical position and tone and colour of the background are crucial influencing factors in the appearance of illusions.
I WORK IN BETWEEN THE CONCEPTS OF ILLUSION AND REALITY AND MY WORK ATTRACTS VIEWERS BY VISUAL PHENOMENA AS WELL AS PHYSICAL CONFUSIONS APPEARING ON THE SURFACE OF THE CERAMIC. LOOKING WITH HALF CLOSED EYES, IN A DARKER LIGHT AND WITH DISTANCE, BRINGS THE ILLUSION TO LIFE FOR ME.
