Robert Shaw was born in Derbyshire in 1974 and gained a BA (hons) first class degree in Interior Architecture and Design in 1997. In 1995 he moved to the coastal village of Staithes in North Yorkshire (10 miles north of Whitby) and began to use his energetic style to create images of the local cottages in the surrounding area and the overbearing impact of the sea and other natural elements.
He has also undertaken a series of large scale architectural paintings of the Georgian Spa town of Harrogate, where he resided for two years. He has exhibited work in a number of galleries throughout the UK.
His work uses contrasting colours and bold forms to depict coastal villages and their interaction with the surrounding elements. He works mainly in oils and mixed media on board.
He has recently moved into Newcastle , with a studio here at The Biscuit Factory. His latest work, exhibited here, depicts scenes in Newcastle, Tynemouth and Cullercoats and uses recycled pieces of text from old books.
