The Artist: Jane Ormes
Jane Ormes is a printmaker based in Bristol. She lives and works in what she describes as a “hugely cluttered house” with her pilot husband, two children and two cats.
Before she discovered screen printing Jane worked freelance for a London based greetings card company. Through them she produced lots of work for Greenpeace which she admits was ironic as she had just married a nuclear bomber pilot. She has illustrated books for both Dorling Kindersley and Oxford University Press. She describes how one of her proudest moments came whilst slightly the worse for drink one Christmas Day. Whilst watching the Queen‘s speech she spied one of her Christmas cards on the Royal Desk!
Jane splits her work time between Spike Print studio and her newly opened shop and gallery space, Fig, which she shares with 5 other makers.
“My screen prints reflect my take on the world. I produce playful, colourful images, often involving animals in absurd situations. I like to think that these creatures all have a secret life that we know nothing about. I keep a notebook to jot down unusual names or lyrical phrases as these can often lead to an idea but its more likely that I will be inspired by a story or situation that
tickles me. I start my design process by arranging paper stencils and cut-outs until I am happy with a composition. I use scissors and a scalpel as much as I do pencils for drawing. I graduated many years ago with a degree in Printed Textiles. Drawing, patterns & textures are all integral to my work and reflect my design background. Large areas of flat, bold colour which is achievable with the screen-printing process, gives my work a strong graphic sensibility.
I like to spend any spare time I have day-dreaming about
Daniel Craig and custard slices.”Jane Ormes 2010
