The Artist: Jim Edwards
Edwards studied in Norwich, graduating in the late 1990s. He now lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne. He has developed a powerful compositional technique that echoes Cubist theories, playing with perspective and giving three dimensional form the flat surface of his canvas.
Edwards’ work has traditionally taken the form of recognizable, contemporary cityscapes, but more latterly he has ventured into increasingly abstract geometric work. The more recent abstract was informs his more representational pieces, and vice versa, and his most recent works are a fine balance between both methods of observation and representation.
Edwards believes that his cityscapes require an element of truth to them. He refines a particular view of a city, removing constructional clutter from his compositions with an aim to convey the familiarity of his scapes to the viewer in an idealized manner.
James’ acute observational skills and unique use of perspective give his paintings a powerful solidity, and unmistakable style. His use of gradient light and rich, deep colour throw his buildings into striking relief making the viewer feel physical presence within the scene.
In contrast, Edwards’ abstract works explores city grid forms, drawing inspiration from blueprints for city block layouts. The results are an interpretation of the universal language of cityscapes in predominantly 2 dimensional patterns and block colour, although these paintings also retain depth through use of dense, subtle colour and tone.
