The Artist: Tim Hollins
Following careers in academia, politics and international business, Tim decided in 2002 to commit the next stage of his life to sculpture at a professional level and to exploring the role of art as a medium for social, cultural and individual expression.
Tim Hollin’s work reflects and celebrates our instinctive love of curved forms, as exemplified by the human body. For him there is almost nothing more subtly complex than a multiform, three dimensional curve, and yet nothing also more beautifully simple. We see it and we understand it.
His sculpture seeks to evoke a simple and direct emotional response, yet also to suggest the subtle complexities of the underlying form. His sculpture is to be touched, with the eyes and the fingers, but above all to be felt, at the root of our senses and emotions.
The pieces at the Biscuit Factory were initially carved in wood, in order to ensure purity of curve and line. The finalisation of the exact curves of the finished form may evolve over weeks of looking and patient carving and fine sanding. Once finished in wood, the piece is moulded and then cast in bronze, using the lost wax process. The aim is to create forms that are part figurative, part organic, but that above all are aesthetically and emotionally pleasing and will go on being so.
