The Artist: Julia Roxburgh
Julia is a local artist and has exhibited with us since the gallery first opened.
‘I gained my BA in Ceramics at Bristol in 1984, and went on to work for six years as a theatrical prop maker in London. In 1991 I moved to Newcastle upon Tyne where I embarked on my two-pronged career as potter and mother.
I make Exuberant, Joyful, Outrageous pots, which challenge the traditional view of functional ceramics. Each hand made piece is a one-off sculpture, a work of art in its own right. Flamboyant slip decoration embellishes strong, bold forms, while slightly over-the-top Baroque modelled details lend a whimsical touch of humour. Vibrant colour and glittering gilt finishes complete the dramatic effect.
I produce work in conventional methods of wheel-throwing, hand- building and casting. My work is very colourful and often based on my own sense of humour. My influences are theatre, circus, sea, sailing and mythical creatures. Clowns and jesters are a favourite, the more bobbles the better. I work to commission and do just what I feel like. Everything is individual, it can never be guaranteed if a dinner service is ordered that it be uniform.'
